How a pineapple can help deal with overwhelm
During an afternoon walk, I caught myself building another large mental task list.
I was thinking about the infinite possible dishes I could make for our dinner, the emails I had to send, the post I was going to write, what I had lined up for the next week…etc.
As the list grew, I could feel my mind working and my heart beating slightly faster. (The heart beating part could also be because of the extreme heat and the brisk walk)
I felt that familiar sensation of overwhelm creeping in.
Until my daughter stopped me in my tracks and reminded me about how to be present.
“Look, Daddy! A baby pineapple!” she said.
With her curious eyes, she was able to enjoy the present moment and reminded me of how we can easily dissolve the sensations of overwhelm in an instant.
The truth is, our brains can only entertain one thought at a time, and only one.
The number one cause of feeling “swamped” or “overwhelmed” in life is not knowing this.
When we feel like we’re ‘multitasking’, it’s actually our minds rapidly switching between two or more thoughts.
Even the greatest minds of our time, like Einstein, for instance, could only focus on one thought at a time.
So what can you do the next time you feel overwhelmed?
Slow down.
The greatest source of self-imposed stress is when we decided to carry many thoughts, tasks, and future ideas.
So, for the love of what’s good for you - STOP!
Take control of any situation and intentionally decide to do one thing - what you’re doing now.
The best part is, we’ve always been good at doing this since a young age.
Just look at my 3-year-old daughter as an example.
Now, it’s your turn to punch overwhelm in the face!
Love
Alex
