In a Nutshell: 7 strategies for wealth and happiness by Jim Rohn
Today, we're going to talk about something that everyone wants: Wealth and Happiness.
Jim Rohn, the late motivational speaker, and personal development guru, had 7 strategies that can help us achieve both.
And, because we're all about keeping things short and sweet, we're going to break it down into bite-sized chunks that you can go through on your coffee break.
Strategy #1: Work harder on yourself than you do on your job.
By now, you’ve probably heard about Abe Lincoln’s productivity secret that goes; “Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe.” Before he became president, Lincoln, was a skilled woodcutter and likely meant for us to do this both literally and figuratively.
Jim Rohn says that the key to success is not just working hard, but working on yourself even harder. Read books, listen to audio, attend seminars, and work on becoming the best version of yourself.
Strategy #2: Become a student of success.
Learn from successful people and try to apply what you learn to your own life. Seek mentors and surround yourself with people who are already successful. Obviously what was done in the past may not work today, however, the principles and the iterations of methods will serve you well. If you’re thinking “I don’t have time or money to invest in resources right now”, to that I say: “You have 5 minutes to watch a quick video and there are plenty of free resources out there on the internet”.
To make it even easier, here are a couple of videos I suggest you start with now:

Strategy #3: Set goals and write them down.
Jim Rohn says that if you don't write down your goals, you're just daydreaming. Write down your long-term and short-term goals and make a plan to achieve them.
Did you know that after the first group of astronauts came back from the moon, they fell into depression?
Why do think this happened?
The source of their disease was the lack of direction after achieving something great.
Their goals ended after their mission was over.
It behooves us to strive some something that is bigger than we are, that scares us a little and that can propel us forward into action for years to come.
Of course, our perceptions and circumstances may change over time, however, our deeply rooted beliefs and values act as the intrinsic moral compasses that will help us determine the criteria for a fulfilling and meaningful life.
Here’s a quick exercise you can try to do that will change the trajectory of your life:
Start by creating 5 categories labeled 1-year, 3-years, 5-years, 10-years, and 25-years.
Under each category, write down 3 SMART goals. They should be specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and timely. (Download a copy of SMART Goal Creator)
Once you’ve determined these goals, write 3 sentences for each of them about why it’s important for you to succeed. If you are having trouble coming up with 3 sentences, it is likely that the goal isn’t important enough to pursue.
Strategy #4: Work smart, not just hard.
Efficiency is key. Don't just work harder, work smarter. Focus on what really matters and delegate the rest.
At the start of any Entrepreneurs's journey, saving costs tend to be at the forefront of the priority list. Altough trying to do everything yourself can save you some money, outsourcing to professionals that can do a much more effective and efficient job will allow you to focus on working on your business as opposed to working in your business.

Strategy #5: Continuously learn and grow.
Life is a never-ending journey of learning and growth. Keep educating yourself and growing as a person.
A great way to determine which facet of your life needs some work is to do a quick exercise called the Pie of Life. (Download the Pie of Life Worksheet)
Look at the 8 categories and give each one a score between 0 - 10, 0 meaning you are nowhere near where you want it to be and 10 meaning you have everything you’ve ever dreamed of with respect to that facet.
You can always watch this video with one of my clients doing the Pie of Life exercise and follow along.
Strategy #6: Take care of your physical, emotional, and spiritual health.
Jim Rohn says that if you don't take care of your health, you can't take care of your wealth. Exercise regularly, eat healthily, and take time to connect with your inner self. No excuses!
If you can’t read for 10 minutes, just read for 5.
If you can’t run 5km, go run 1km.
If you can’t eat 3 healthy meals a day, start with 1 per day.
It’s all about forming the habits you want to create in your life and by introducing small, achievable changes, you’ll build the momentum to create your ideal habits.
Strategy #7: Find a balanced approach to wealth and happiness.
Jim Rohn says that it's not about how much money you make, but how much money you keep. Live below your means, invest in your future, and find a balance between work and play.
A great way to start is by following the 70-30 rule.
Basically, it goes like this…
70% of your earned income will go to essentials like food, housing, and transportation.
Then, you can set aside 10% for Savings, 10% for investments, and 10% for charity.
Why 10% to a charity you ask?
When we are able to give without any expectation of return, our minds understand that we are living in abundance.
And from this place, we are able to be more generative and resourceful.
We can make better and quicker decisions with the most clarity possible.
The truth is if you can’t donate a dime from a dollar now, you won’t be able to give away $10,000 when you make $1,000,000.
So, there you have it!
